Johan van Hengel

Johan van Hengel is a Rotterdam-based furniture and product designer with a

technical background in industrial design. Soon after graduating from The
Hague University’s Industrial Design program in 2004, Van Hengel joined Feiz
Design Studio in Amsterdam where he worked on consumer electronics for
companies such as Huawei, Logitec, Nokia, and furniture for brands like
OFFECCT, Artifort and Gelderland.


Van Hengel launched his eponymous, Rotterdam-based studio in 2013. Winner
of the Elle Decoration Talent Award 2010, Van Hengel’s TOR side table –
designed in partnership with Ralf Lambie – was put into production by Dutch
furniture brand Montis. In February 2016, Wrong.London (formerly Wrong for
Hay) launched Van Hengel’s 30degree oak veneer lampshade series, which
was exhibited at the brand’s exhibition in Milan’s Brera district during Milan
Design Week 2016. His new shelving system Folded was recently added to
Muuto’s family of Nordic designs. During the Ogatec 2016 his PET-felt lounge
chair – Nook - was launched by Dutch company De Vorm.
